Textual Analysis of Fish Tank
The first scene starts with a simple black and white title saying ‘Fish Tank’ and non-diegetic sound of someone breathing heavily, this is followed by a long shot of the female character, Mia, bending over whilst catching her breath. She then stands up straight and is wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a tank top which gives off the impression, along with the heavy breathing, that she has been doing some form of exercise. Mia then moves towards the window to make a phone call and you can hear the edited diegetic sound of her dialling numbers. She is difficult to make out when she is stood by the window because the natural lighting from outside makes her look like a silhouette. From the view out of the window, it is possible to tell that she is overlooking a large town and is situated in a council estate. There is then a diegetic conversation of her on phone, Mia’s character is made clear at this point because of her strong Essex accent and the rude language she uses. She seems like the stereotypical ‘chav’ because of her scraped back hair, large hoop earrings, tracksuits, accent and language, using words such as ‘bitch’.
There is then a tracking shot of her walking outside, she storms towards a building, picks up gravel and begins to throw it at a window. The next part of dialogue shows a lot about her character, she swears at her friend’s father which shows a lot of disrespect. The next shot is another tracking shot of her walking, during this shot you can see the area that she lives in and from this you can see an unused park and many council flats. This gives off the impression that is a very run-down place, and slightly reflects on Mia’s personality. The first two minutes of this film mostly show how obnoxious and uncouth she is.
The sound to our movie
We have decided to use the song 'Talk show host' by Radio head
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Rc95l6SnSI
The reason why we decided to use the song is because it is slightly depressing, which reflects the attitude of the boy and the lyrics have a lonely and desolate feel about them.
I want to
I want to be someone else or I'll explode
Floating upon this surface for the birds
The birds
The birds
This is, in a way, how the boy feel about himself.
We decided to use the song throughout the 2 minutes and finish the song when the 2 minuted finish.
We found the song from the film 'Romeo and Juliet.'

The 9 Key elements of our movie...
The 9 key elements of our movie are very important in portraying and exerting our message. They are the reforms that will make our movie more understandable to the audience reading it. It is also vital for us t follow the expectations of our genre.
- Credits that have: The main actor, Director and Producer, the music title and the music artist.
- The non-diagetic music that reflects the boy.
- The Title of the Movie
- The boys negative and oppressed attitude towards life resulting in crime.
- Interesting and experimental shots with bland and grey color wash to reflect the movie genre and the dullness of the boy's life.
- The punkey, skinhead styled clothes that attracts our ideal audience member. We do not want the protagonist to be 'chavvy' in any way, but instead we want him to be edgy and rebellious.
- The loud, diagetic sound of his rebellious acts to heighten the events, like a loud sound of a knife banging against the bars as he walks along; a 'clang, clang' noise.\
- The institutions at the very beginning that will distribute, produce and exhibit our movie.
- Clear shots that shows the boy's point of view to exemplify how boring his life is.
Narrative theory applied to our film
There are many different narrative theories that are used to describe stories. One of those theories was invented by a man called Todorov. He created this chart: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Our film in a slight way fits to Todorov's theory but the theory can only work in our film if it is only applied to the boy:
Equilibrium - the boy went on his usual ways; committing crime and creating disorder.
Disruption - The boy gets into a knife fight, the boy is emmitted to hospital, becomes friends with man, man reads diary, boy goes home and finds house abandoned, the boy trashes man's house, man returns.
Resolution - Man offers the boy to live with him.
Restored Order - Man encourages boy to continue writing, the boy and the man live happily together during the man's final months.
New Equilibrium - The boy continues writing, gets book published and dedicates book to man.
But if you were to apply the theory to the man soley, it would not work.
INITIAL SITUATION, ABSENTATION, INTERDICTION, VIOLATION of INTERDICTION, RECONNAISSANCE, DELIVERY, TRICKERY, COMPLICITY, VILLAINY, LACK, MEDIATION, BEGINNING COUNTER-ACTION DEPARTURE, FIRST FUNCTION OF THE DONOR, HERO'S REACTION, RECEIPT OF A MAGICAL AGENT, GUIDANCE, STRUGGLE, VICTORY, LIQUIDATION, RETURN, PURSUIT,
RESCUE, UNRECOGNIZED ARRIVAL, UNFOUNDED CLAIMS, DIFFICULT TASK, SOLUTION, RECOGNITION, EXPOSURE,
TRANSFIGURATION, PUNISHMENT and WEDDING.
It is very hard to fit our story in Propp's 31 functions:
- Initial situation: Trouble boy seeks crime to escape from boredom of own life.
- Absentation: -
- Interdiction: The police forbids the boy to break the law.
- Violation: The boy still breaks the law many times.
- Reconnaissance: The boy finds ways to occupy his mind...
- Delivery: The boy eventually finds a way by getting into a knife fight.
Trickery:- Complicity: The man finds the boys diary and reads it whilst the boy is asleep.
- Villainy: The boy becomes infuriated
- Mediation: The boy doesn't talk to the man for 3 days.
Counteraction- Departure: The boy leaves the hospital.
- 1st function of donor: The boy is tested when he discovers his family has abandoned their house.
- Hero's reaction: The boy trashes the man's house.
- Receipt of Magical Agent: The boy needs love after discovering his house abandoned.
Spatial transference- Struggle: The man returns home to find the boy lying amongst his trash.
Branding- Victory: The man offers that the boy lives with him.
- Liquidation: The boy now has somewhere to live.
ReturnPursuitThe Hero is rescued.Unrecognized arrivalUnfounded claimsDifficult TaskSolutionRecognitionExposureTransfigurationPunishmentWedding
As you can see the theory hardly fits our film and this is because our film is a very independent film.
Here is the 7 plots to the most common of fairy tales:
The Quest: The hero is set out on a goal to retrieve something and he wont stop until that thing is retrieved. There are many obstacles he has to undertake before he succeeds. Examples of this is:
The Lord of the Rings, Apocalypse Now, Raiders of the Lost Ark
Voyage and Return: Similar to that of 'the quest' the protagonist is transported to another world and then transported back again. During his journey he discovers much about himself and the world around him. Examples of this is:
Voyage and Return stories are Alice in Wonderland, Gulliver's Travels, Back to the Future, the Wizard of Oz.
Rebirth: The protagonist has a spell inflicted on her/him normally as a result of his/her own doing. The liberation can be achieved from another force. Love is commonly used as a spell-breaker to set the protagonist free from his spell. Examples of this is:
Comedy: Any story that is typically funny. Examples of this is: Rebirth story type are A Christmas Carol, Beauty and the Beast.
All’s Well That Ends Well, When Harry Met Sally, Some Like It Hot.
Tragedy: The protagonist goes through a series of actions that results in his/her own downfall. The downfall then avokes a series of emotions in the audience. Examples of this is:
Hamlet. Carlito’s Way, Macbeth, Oedipus the King.
Overcoming the Monster: The protagonist must overcome a evil being that has exerted an evil force over a person/place/people. Examples of this is: T
he Silence of the Lambs, Dracula, Jaws, Hansel and Gretel.
Rags to Ritches: The protagonist is 'plucked' from nothing and then made rich. The protagonist is normally returned to his/hers original position and must overcome some foe to regain the wealth.
Examples of this is: Aladdin, Cinderella, Great Expectations.
None of these stories perfectly fit our story, but most of them have similiar traits to ours. The Quest has a similar reform to our own plot because the boy is in search of his own self. The voyage and return: The boy discovers himself along the way. Tragedy: the boy exults to crime to succumb his boredom which results in him ending up in hospital. The one that mostly fits our plot is RAGS TO RITCHES because the boy is plucked from the streets and made into a successful writer.

The Type of Institutions that would produce, exhibit and distribute our film.
Previously I did some research on our genre 'Independent films' and during the research I encountered the companies that were commissioned to support Independant films. These companies were those such as,Fox searchlight, 20th century Fox, Focus features and Sony Pictures Classics and entertainment.
Fox Searchlight is a branch of 20th century Fox and it is the the branch that is dedicated to supporting Independent films. They have supported films such as 'Once,' 'Sideways,' 'Juno' and 'Little Miss Sunshine.' A recent film they have supported called 'Never let me go.' According to http://www.imdb.com the plot is like this: 'As children, Ruth, Kathy and Tommy, spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them.' After watching the trailer I have observed that it seems to be a very arty film with many beautiful shots and angles. The film is a period drama that takes place in the mid 1990s and the costume is very english and old fashioned. Fox searchlight has also supported gangster films such as 'Street Kings.' A our film contains the same edgy style I feel this company would be a good company to support our film. Street Kings is about how a cop is accused of execution of a fellow officer and because his wife is dead finds it hard to remain on the straight and narrow. He is therefore forced to go up against the cop culture he has been part of most of his life. The film shows aspects of rebellion similar to our film.

Here is a list of modern independent studios:
Summit Entertainment is one of the more successful companies as it has produced films that have been highly acknowledged. Films such as 'New Moon' and 'American Pie' has made millions of pounds. I feel that this company would not support our film because it has supported films that have become very big in Hollywood.

Lion's Gate Films have produced films such as, 'Saw,' 'American Psycho,' 'Dogma' and 'Affliction.' All of the films contain elements that re dark and gruesome. I think that this company would be quite a good supporter of our film because our film has got quite a dark feel about it, but the films that Lion's gate supports are films that have heavy subjects.
